Communication Protocols for Distributed Energy Resources (Listed a UU 308)

This course provides an overview of how standard application-layer communication protocols (DNP3 and IEEE 2030.5) are used to manage Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in the electric grid and give insight on how other DER communication protocols are related. Different use cases and requirements for managing DER with communication protocols will be presented as well as guidelines for how to select the application-layer communication protocol(s) to meet DER requirements. Attendees will learn how other standards and mandates, including IEEE 1547, SunSpec, and CA Rule 21, apply to the use of communication protocols for managing DER.

Learning Objectives:

  • The emerging information model standard for DER communications
  • The basic operation of the communication protocols IEEE 1815 (DNP3) and IEEE 2030.5 (SEP 2.0)
  • The purpose and functions of each protocol
  • What systems the protocols are used in
  • How DER related measurements, controls, modes, scheduling, and other data is represented with each protocol
  • The trade-offs of each protocol and how to choose a protocol for your DER use cases

Specific knowledge, skills and/or capabilities that attendees should acquire by taking this course:

  • DER use cases and information models
  • Knowledge about each of the communication protocols:
    • How data is transferred
    • How commands are sent/confirmed
    • What data types and formats are supported
    • What layers of the protocol stack are used
    • What security features are supported
  • Knowledge of the communication standards:
    • How the standards are maintained
    • What users groups, certifications and/or conformance tests are available
    • How the protocols are being standardized for DER applications with profiles, application notes, and protocol mappings
  • Skills on how to create and analyze DER use cases and requirements
