The Interoperability Documents specify the parameters supported in a particular implementation. They are derived from the IEC 60870-5 Companion Standard documents and may contain additional information required to ensure compatibility. The Interoperability Documents are typically stored in one of two document formats:

• Rich Text Format (RTF) - can be read by Microsoft Word or almost any popular word processor.
• Microsoft Word '97 - If the recipient does not have Microsoft Word '97, a free viewer is available for download on the Microsoft web site http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/index.htm#downloads
