Triangle MicroWorks (TMW) began working on a DNP3 pilot project with Siemens in 1994. At that time, Westronics/GE turned over the DNP3 development/direction to the DNP3 Users Group Technical Committee and it became an "open protocol". For TMW, the DNP3 work for Siemens led to projects using other protocols, including IEC 60870-5 and Modbus. In 1997, IEEE 1379 selected DNP3 & IEC 60870-5-101 as the “IEEE Recommended Practice for Data Communications Between Remote Terminal Units and Intelligent Electronic Devices in a Substation”.

Triangle MicroWorks has grown over the years to provide Communication Protocol Software Libraries, PC-based Master/Outstation Protocol Simulation Software, Conformance Test Software, OPC drivers, and Protocol Gateways for industry-standard communication protocols such as DNP3, IEC 60870-5, and Modbus.

We make it our job to participate in protocol governing bodies such as the DNP Users Group (including representation on the DNP Technical & Marketing Committees), the IEC Technical Committee 57 Working Group 03, Modbus-IDA, and the OPC Foundation. We keep up with changes in the standards, update our Libraries accordingly, and consequently keep your products current with minimal resource allocation on your part. Finally, we have a large customer and contact base which helps to resolve unique issues that may surface as we "fit" protocols into your products.
